Things I Said - I Will Never Do as A Mom
Sometimes I do wish that I was as wise as I was before I had kids. I remember journaling whenever I felt low as a teenager and writing down all the things which my parents didn’t know they were doing and how I would do things differently when I had kids. Even as an adult, I’d see kids at the grocery store and I’d think to myself, “My kids will never get away with that kind of behaviour.” But now that I’m a parent, I’m realizing that I do a lot of things that I swore I’d never do before I had kids. Here are just a few of the things I used to say.
1. “I’ll never use my kids as an excuse to get out of going somewhere”
I can’t even count the times whenever I’ve done this. Kids are a great excuse to get out something you don’t want to do or see people you don’t want to see. There’s no shame in it. They’ll never know. That’s why God gave us babies, isn’t it? To avoid unwanted social interaction?
2. I’ll never use TV as a babysitter”
For sneaking in a shower, I’m ashamed to admit that I’ve often used Disney Jr. as a way to escape. I can wake up earlier, or hope that both kids nap at the same time, but really, who am I kidding? 25 minutes of Jake and the Neverland Pirates is worth a hot shower and shaved legs.
3. Being a Big Fat Hypocrite
This is a catch-all for pretty much everything in parenting. “Don’t hit your sister!” (as I swat my son’s hand). “Quit yelling!!!!” (as the vein in my neck starts to bulge). I’m constantly throwing around consequences, like early bedtime, if these little ones don’t get their act together. Well, guess what? Mommy’s act is barely hanging by a thread every day, and she’s probably the one who should be sent to bed early (yes please). All of us moms want to do the right thing. We start with a “practice what you preach” philosophy and it gradually melts into the more realistic “do as I say, not as I do” mantra.
4. Have some screen time
Let’s all admit it. We all promised to never let our kids be even close to a screen until they were at least 12. And then we got pregnant with our 2nd when our first was 3 years old. Or we live in a place where the air hurts your skin when you go outside for about 6 months out of the year say hot summer! Or we realized that our child is not going to die if they watch an episode of any web series of our favourites like Korean Drama.
