INDIA'S MOST OLDEST CITIES AND PLACES
India is an ancient country full with treasures. While the country is expanding at an exponential rate, there remain numerous old wonders. You may see and touch what life was like in ancient India, its architecture and colours.

- 1. VARANASI
Kashi was
the name of a historic city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The city is
claimed to be over 3000 years old and is now a vital pilgrimage site for
worshippers. Varanasi, located on the banks of the Ganga, has a magical charm
that few other locations can match. Varanasi, according to writer Mark Twain,
is "ancient than history, older than tradition, older even than mythology,
and appears twice as old as all of them together."
- 2. OLD DELHI
In the past,
it was known as Shahjahanabad and was founded as a walled city in 1639. The
city was the Mughal Empire's capital until 1857, and remains of it may still be
seen today. Today, the area is home to ancient historical treasures, bazaars, cafes,
and other attractions. The poet Mirza Ghalib's house, as well as the majestic
Jama Masjid, are also located in Old Delhi.
- 3. THANJAVUR
This is the
greatest example of Dravidian architecture in a typical ancient Tamil city.
This historic city has a remarkable history and was the seat of the Chola
Empire. The Great Living Chola Temples are designated as a UNESCO World
Heritage Site. The Tanjore Big Temple, built between AD 985 and 1014, is a
must-see attraction.
- 4. NALANDA
The Nalanda
world is claimed to have been formed in the 5th century AD. Nalanad area, a
UNESCO World Heritage Site, is well-known for its University, which attracts
students from all over the world. It thrived the most under the Gupta Empire,
which ruled during the 5th and 6th centuries.
- 5. UJJAIN
Ujjain is a holy city in Madhya Pradesh that is estimated to be 5000 years old. On the banks of the Shipra River, the city hosts the world's biggest religious gathering, known as the Kumbh Mela. Every 12 years, the festival is held. Today, the city is a popular pilgrimage site with various temples.
