HOT COFFEE
If you don't
mind a bitter, roasty drip coffee with no extra milk or sugar, this is the
finest sugar-free alternative. Add a splash of milk or a dash of zero-calorie
sweetener if it's too sweet. If you want, you can request a pump or two of
sugar-free flavor syrup from the coffeemaker.
ICED COFFEE
The cold
alternative to drip coffee is the same. The Starbucks menu includes Classic
syrup (or simple syrup) by default in their iced coffee, so make sure to remove
it before ordering.
COLD BREW
Cold brew,
like iced coffee, has no calories or sugar. The key distinctions are that it
contains more caffeine and has a smoother flavour. So keep this for a morning
when you're feeling very sluggish.
ESPRESSO SHOTS
Order a
doppio for a fast drink that you'll be back with in a hurry. (A two-ounce
nuanced espresso may be easier to take than eight ounces of black coffee.)
ESPRESSO MACCHIATO
It's not as
sweet as the sugary Caramel Macchiato (which is actually an upside-down vanilla
latte with caramel drizzle...but we digress), but don't dismiss it until you've
tasted it. The Espresso Macchiato is a European-style drink made with a shot of
espresso and a dollop of steamed milk and froth.
ESPRESSO CON PANNA
Choose the
espresso con panna if you need a little something to make the shots more
acceptable. It's topped with whipped cream, which contains sweet vanilla syrup,
but in such minuscule amounts that the sugar content stays zero grammes.
CAFFE AMERICANO
Because a
hot Americano is just espresso shots and water, it's inherently sugar-free. The
sugar will be little if you treat it like a drip coffee and finish it with a
dash or two of milk.
ICED CAFFE AMERICANO
Give it the
same treatment as its cool relative, and you'll be OK. (If you really want it
sweet, start with a single pump of conventional or sugar-free syrup; you may
not need as much as you think.)
ICED CAFFE LATE
Once again, ice cubes come to the rescue—along with 7 grammes of sugar. If you don't want to use non-dairy milk and still want a Grande, simply order it cold instead of hot.
